Abstract
This is a study of Indian migrant flutesellers in Kathmandu and their coping strategies. This paper argues for the need to study migration from the livelihood perspective as the lives of migrants and their families are found to be significantly affected by this phenomenon. Based on the sustainable livelihood approach of Robert Chambers, this qualitative study analyzes economic, socio-cultural and psychological aspects of the migrants to understand how these factors determine the choice of a particular coping strategy of the migrants. This paper shows that the low-income, different socio-cultural settings, religious beliefs and personal factors of migrants affect the choice of coping strategies.
