Appeal for Contribution to Chautari Research Fellowship Fund

Dear friends and well-wishers,
For almost three decades Martin Chautari has been involved in research and discussions that have endeavored to strengthen Nepal’s public sphere. Its public library, journals and academic publications have augmented the research infrastructure and contributed to mentoring young researchers. Apart from weekly discussions every Sunday and Tuesday, conferences, seminars and workshops that aim to bring the academic community into dialogue and collaborative possibilities are also among Chautari’s activities.

Martin Chautari believes in creating a strong, viable environment where public debate can thrive and where young researchers feel drawn to academic pursuits. For this, academic, institutional and financial support is paramount. Martin Chautari, in collaboration with various donors, has provided fellowships to young researchers working on different aspects of media, education and political transitions in Nepal. Many young researchers have benefitted from such fellowships and are established researchers in various academic disciplines today. Additionally, academic workshops, reading seminars, journal writing and other exercises that strengthen research capacity are also part of Martin Chautari’s academic and institutional attempts to encourage young researchers.

However, these attempts have faced financial hurdles time and again. Neither the state nor the private sector has expressed interest in supporting these endeavors. Nevertheless, with the aim of supporting young Nepali researchers, including students enrolled in universities within Nepal, in their academic research and writing, Martin Chautari has established a Chautari Research Fellowship Fund with an initial seed of Rupees two lakhs. Since ensuring the viability of such activities requires the collaboration of more than one individual or institution, we appeal for public contributions to this fund. We believe that your donation will be of immense value to young researchers in Nepal who face financial hardships but are otherwise determined and capable of innovative academic contributions.
