Nepali - Thami - English Dictionary

2021-10-18

Thami, known by its own speakers as Thangmi, is one of Nepal's little known and endangered Tibeto-Burman languages. Spoken by 20,000 members of a 30,000 strong ethnic community of the same name, most of the Thami community still lives in their ancestral villages in Dolakha and Sindhupalcok districts east of Kathmandu. The genetic position of the Thami language within the Tibeto-Burman language family remains contested, but as illustrated by many of the entries in this trilingual dictionary, the language bears a striking resemblance to both the Dolakha dialect of Newar and the Rai-Kiranti languages. The dictionary contains around 2,000 entries encompassing the core vocabulary of Thami. Both Nepali and Thami are rendered in the Devanagari script, and precise.
