Note: Those who register will be sent assigned readings (namely, four articles). During the online webinar, it will be assumed that the participants will have already read those articles. They will be expected to comment on them and on the initial presentation by Dr Sarkar.

Swatahsiddha Sarkar is a Professor, the Centre for Himalayan Studies, University of North Bengal, Darjeeling and was the Director of the Centre during 2019–2022. Having nurtured a keen interest in Himalayan Studies throughout his career, Sarkar has been engaged in Nepal studies since 2015. He has contributed more than 50 research articles and chapters in edited volumes and occasionally contributed op-eds in national news dailies. His book, which came out in 2013, was titled, Gorkhaland Movement: Ethnic Conflict and State Response, while he also co-edited a volume in 2013, titled, Ethnicity in India: Issues in Community, Culture and Conflict. Meanwhile, he is eagerly anticipating his new monograph, Contours of South Asian Social Anthropology: Connecting India and Nepal (2022, Routledge).
