This reading seminar is an introduction to the social studies of science and technology. It is an interdisciplinary seminar that focuses on social, political and economic influences on scientific research and technological innovation and how these shape our society. The readings listed below will approach scientific controversies through apertures such as discourse and media analysis, network analysis, the sociology of social/science movements and ICT studies. Particularly, the seminar will offer multiple perspectives to apply Science Technology Society (STS) theories and methods to Nepali cases.

At the end of the reading seminar, the participant will

  • Identify basic STS concepts and methods
  • Gain awareness of the development of science and technology in diverse cultural contexts
  • Understand public policy dimensions of Science, Technology and Innovations
  • Gain an understanding of basic STS methodologies and the notion of scientific controversies
  • Apply social science methods to analyse scientific controversies

Sohan Prasad Sha is currently a researcher at Martin Chautari. He has been awarded a Ph.D. for his dissertation "Towards National Innovation System in Nepal: Role of Actors and Institutions in Building Science, Technology and Innovation' from the Centre for Studies in Science Policy, School of Social Science, Jawaharlal Nehru University. He is a core member of Digital Studies Group (DSG) which is a network of STS scholars from the "Global North" and the "Global South" working on digital technologies and practices in our respective fields.

Seminar dates: January 7– March 4, 2019. The seminar will be held every Monday from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.
