Condolence Notice

Martin Chautari and its members are immensely saddened by the passing away of Odd Hoftun on March 14, 2023 at the age of 95. Hoftun came to Nepal from Norway in early 1958 and over the next several decades, he established the foundations of the Nepali hydropower development industry. In the mid-1990s he helped create what later became Martin Chautari, the independent academic NGO.
Martin Chautari and its members offer our deepest condolences to the entire Hoftun family.
Hoftun’s life and work have been documented in Power for Nepal: Odd Hoftun & the History of Hydropower Development by Peter Svalheim (2015) and What Went Right: Sustainability Versus Dependence in Nepal's Hydropower Development by Mark Liechty (2022).
