Forms of Exploitation in Loan Sharking Practices in Mahottari District
Puja Malla, Independent Researcher
Abstract:
Many scholars have conceptualized exploitation in different ways. In this research, I conceptualize exploitation as one that arises from indebtedness. This study identifies multiple forms of exploitation experienced by borrowers in Mahottari District. These include a broad spectrum of exploitative practices ranging from verbal intimidation and threats to land dispossession, physical violence, homelessness, and psychological harm. At the same time, my study highlights that exploitation is not universally applied as some borrowers experience more lenient treatment depending on the loan shark's character, social ties, or if it is impossible to recover the debt.
